The Graduates _ Carpenters Workshop Gallery, London
Collaboration between Carpenters Workshop Gallery and design curator Lidewij Edelkoort.
Edelkoort has surveyed the work of recent graduates from more than 50 academies to formulate a final selection that defines a new organic design language which observes how - “A fresh generation of designers are investigating their identity and their roots – sometimes literally going back in history to uncover authenticity and primal instincts. They create hybrids between technology and touch, innovating materials, forging form and conceptualizing rituals for a humbler lifestyle fit for our ever-evolving times.”
As Edelkoort explains, “A new form of archaeology emerges. Students catalogue this experience by creating new artefacts, remnants for living that are arranged as still lives. A true sense of exploring classic or ancient beauty, rendered in quick gestures and abstract patterns, sporadically using color in hushed harmonies. Furniture is therefore coated to look like stone, a post-fossil idea dreamt up for tomorrow’s Fred Flintstone. Amphorae resemble historical vestiges while bronze is cast into miniature monuments, decorating homes, composing collections and providing spiritual depth for the future.”
The HARDCORE exhibition revolves around elemental aesthetics, materials that create a world that is more lasting. Exploring a counter digital movement from a design perspective, objects that are a physically heavy and digitally light. Leaning towards a visual language and atmosphere that seems to come from a previous age evokes a feeling of reliability.
The objects derive from a new ritualism, one that is about a more tranquil way of living while staying in touch with the physical world.

The award presentation of the international up-and-coming designer contest – the Pure Talents Contest – has long been a successful format and constitutes its own exhibition area where young designers present their work themselves.
The Graduates _ Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Paris
“A fresh generation of designers is responding to our chaotic age – investigating their identity and roots, often going back to the beginning of time to uncover authenticity and primal instincts. They find solace in their ancestral backgrounds and a shared sense of ancient history.
The brut expressions that result from this movement dominate this exhibition. Graduates catalogue their experiences by imagining unknown artefacts; remnants of a distant past rendered in raw materials such as sand, stone, clay and concrete, warmed up by natural wovens and wild fibres. These young designers create hybrids between the industrial process and the handcrafted, reincarnating found fragments and composing new collages; thus proposing rituals for a more humble and sustainable lifestyle, and envisioning a form of contemporary archaeology.”
